Rachol Seminarians overcame a stiff challenge from the Diocesan priests team and emerged the winners via the tie breaker 4-2 to lift the 5th Edition of the St Joseph Vaz Cup at Duler Stadium, Mapusa. The tournament was organized by the John Paul II Foundation for Sports – Goa in collaboration with Our Lady of Remedios Church, Nerul who are celebrating 450 years of Christian faith. In the regular time the match ended goalless. In the tie breaker Brs. Sanford, Nion, Calburn and Denzil scored for the Rachol Seminarians while Fr. Norbert and Fr. Americo were the scorers for the Diocesan priests.
The Rachol Seminarians made it to the finals defeating the defending champions of the last edition Seminarians of the Pallotine Congregation 4-0, then defeating the Pilar Seminarians 1-0 and later in semifinals defeating Saligao Seminarians 2-0 via tie-breakers.
The Diocesan priests entered the finals defeating the SFX, Pilarpriests and were later held to a draw by the Salesian priests.
The Saligao Seminary entered the semifinals defeating SVD Seminarians 2-0 while the SFX Pilar priests and the Salesians of Don Bosco priests played a goalless draw in one of the league encounters.
The tournament attracted a total of 220 priests and Seminarians. There were three aspects to the event which included Faith, Fellowship and Football.
The Duler Stadium at Mapusa was experiencing a festival since all the participants had come with musical instruments and there was an electrifying atmosphere all around with priests and Seminarians exchanging pleasentries. Prayers at the centre of the field for every single match with players from both the team’s kneeling down was a treat to watch.
There were seven elements on which the tournament was played in respect to faith and Sports going hand in hand. There were video sessions including that of the Holy Father Pope Francis and talks organised as vision casting of the Sports Movement as part of the Church.
The SFX, Pilar priests were awarded the Fair Play trophy.
Elvis Gomes the GFA President was the guest of the finals along with Fr. Peter D’Mello Rector of SFX Seminary Pilar and Fr. AgneloPinheiro from Rachol Seminary.
