Xavier’s open Lab Day
\”Xavier\’s Open Lab Day\” was organized by the Science Faculty of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, as part of the National Science Day celebrations. The programme was organised under the DBT STAR College Scheme with the objective of promoting scientific curiosity among school students. A brief inaugural ceremony was held at the Science Block of the College wherein the event was declared open by the Administrator Fr. Antonio Salema, in the presence of the Vice Principal & Convenor of the Programme Ms Ursula Barreto, the Coordinator of the Star College Scheme Dr. Trelita de Sousa, faculty members and students of the college. The event witnessed an impressive turnout, with over 400 school students from across Goa visiting the campus. Several activities including quiz, scientific games, experiments, models and exhibits were organized by each of the 8 science departments of the college covering topics of different interests in the field of science.
School students were seen engrossed in lab activities and were most excited to learn about the experiments on display like, Newtons rings , Surface Tension of water and soap solution by Capillary rise method, Demonstration of waveforms using CRO, Fizzy Potions, Changing Water to Wine, Golden rain, Electronic Dice, Vehicle parking system using RFID, Intruder Alarm, Exploration of plant life such as Sea weeds, Biodiversity and conservation efforts, Plant Tissue culture, Advances in Biotechnology, Fingerprint Analysis, Blood grouping, Microorganisms on the human body, Effect of antibiotics on bacteria, Fermented drink – Kanji, Voice recognition using ML and AI, Visual guardian App for visually impaired persons using ML and NLP, Line Follower robot, Puzzle solving and card games, mathematics involved in tricks, mathematics in everyday life.
The Xavier\’s Open Lab Day, provided a dynamic platform for students to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of science and technology. The event successfully fostered a spirit of curiosity, innovation, and collaboration among participants, reaffirming the college\’s commitment to promoting scientific literacy and excellence in education.
One of the highlights of the event was the Science “Super-Hero” Competition, wherein students of the college from each department showcased their creativity by designing mascots representing their respective fields of study. The competition not only encouraged artistic expression but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among participants as they worked collaboratively to bring their ideas to life.
As part of the National Science Day celebrations, the science departments also hosted several other competitions for college students, like rangoli competition, poster competition, hand painting competition, pebble stone painting competition and interdepartmental skit competition all of which were based on the theme “Science for a Sustainable Future”.
