A study tour to Mangalore-Bengaluru was curated by the faculty of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at St Xavier’s College, Mapusa for their final year students. The purpose of the trip was to provide experiential learning and exposures require to better understand the media industry and apply what they have learnt in class.
In Mangalore, the group visited St Aloysius College and explored their facilities including community radio station, Radio Sarang, the Chapel on campus as well as the College Museum. They also visited Basel Mission Press, the first printing press of coastal Karnataka established in 1841, DaijiWorld studios, and Diganta Press, where they learnt about new age printing and also witnessed laser printing. In Bengaluru, the study tour group first spent an engaging evening at the Thomson Reuters office in Bangalore, one of the world’s top media and information organizations. The Bureau Chief and his team showed the students around, explained the work they do, and even conducted a quick GK quiz.
The students also spent a day at the Yeshwanthpur campus of Christ University, gaining valuable insights into the state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure the university offers its students. The faculty of the Media Department warmly welcomed and introduced the students to the courses available, innovative recording studios, computer labs, and latest technology to foster creative learning.
The students were given an enriching opportunity to meet the Editor of The Hindu. They learned about the functioning of the organization and received first-hand advice from a professional with over 35 years of experience in the field. Next, the students visited the Bengaluru office of Deccan Herald, one of Karnataka’s most respected English-language newspapers that prides itself on its national outlook, with local expertise.
The students also visited the office of PR Hub, a company that specialises in Public Relations. Here, the team gave detailed sessions on the field of PR, and provided appropriate examples and expertise. The group also visited IKEA to experience the marketing initiatives taken up by the Swedish enterprise. After the week-long educational tour, the students were thrilled to have gained valuable insights into the professional fields which they had hitherto only delved into theoretically.
