The Museum of Christian Art Temporarily Closed

The Museum of Christian Art located within the Convent of Santa Monica, Old Goa, will remain closed to visitors from Monday, 2nd May 2022 to Monday, 23rd May 2022.
The Museum of Christian Art (MoCA), Goa, set up with the technical and financial assistance of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Portugal, and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), New Delhi, has enriched the cultural heritage of Goa since its inaugural on 23rd January 1994.
MoCA houses a unique collection of Christian art objects, spanning from the 16th to the mid-20th centuries. Recognized the world over as the perfect synthesis of two cultural manifestations, the Indian and the Portuguese, these Indo-Portuguese Christian art objects, besides their antiquity are known for their distinctive Indian contribution, and whether sculpture, metalware, ivory, woodwork or embroidered liturgical vestments, are of exceptional richness and perfection.
From 2017-2020, the Museum was engaged in a major upgradation project jointly planned and executed by MoCA and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Portugal.  The project focussed on upgrading the museum to present day world museographic standards, as well as on enhancing the visitor\’s experience by creating an inviting and comfortable space, accessible to all.
Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the reopening of MoCA could not take place as scheduled in March 2020.  In January 2021, the Museum reopened its doors to visitors after the first phase of installation of most of its collection. The final installation of art objects at the Museum will be undertaken during the temporary closure period between 2nd-23rd May, 2022.
The Museum of Christian Art will reopen to visitors on Tuesday, 24th May 2022.
