The 14th of February is remembered as a day of love. From 2026 onwards, it has taken on a deeper and more enduring meaning with the appointment of Fr. Agnel Pinheiro as the Bishop of the Diocese of Sindhudurg. Truly, it is a gift of love to the Church and to all who have known and journeyed with him.
A Remarkable Maturity in Formation
When I first encountered him, he was already in his final year at the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol, and even then, he stood out for his maturity in thought, conduct, and vision. He was already a man of purpose and mission—deeply rooted in faith, guided by conviction, and marked by inner discipline. His clarity of mind and depth of commitment reflected years of sincere formation.
A Mentor and Companion in Dialogue
I loved spending time with him. Our conversations were enriching, thoughtful, and wide-ranging. We spoke about many issues that were “rocking the world,” and—often in a lighter vein—we would arrive at what we felt were the best possible solutions. In many quiet and significant ways, he has influenced and enriched my own priestly journey. We have shared moments of discernment, struggle, joy, and thanksgiving.
A Leader Who Brings Out the Best
One of his most striking qualities is his ability to bring out the best in others. He is a natural team worker who makes everyone feel involved in the task and mission at hand. Appreciation flows easily from his heart. He encourages, affirms, and motivates those who work with him.
An Enriching Journey of Shared Growth
Over the years, many encounters with him have been marked by capacity-building and life-giving conversations. His words are thoughtful, balanced, and rooted in experience.
One never leaves his presence empty-‘headed’. There is always a renewed perspective, a fresh insight, or a gentle challenge that leads to personal and spiritual growth.
Brotherhood Beyond Responsibilities
Beyond formal ministry, there are also cherished memories of simple fraternity. Playing volleyball together in the priests’ group brought moments of laughter, teamwork, and genuine friendship. The team will never forget his presence. These moments reveal his natural ability to build relationships that are warm, joyful, and sincere.
A Shepherd for Today’s Church
Now, as he takes up the responsibility of a Bishop, there is great confidence that he will strengthen and guide the faith of many. He is a convinced man of God—one who listens, discerns, and leads with clarity and compassion.
Leadership Rooted in Participation
He possesses strong administrative skills combined with a pastoral heart. He has the rare gift of making people feel important in the shared journey. Under his leadership, collaboration will grow, participation will be encouraged, and the Church will move forward as one family united in mission.
On this grace-filled occasion, hearts are filled with thanksgiving for his life, vocation, and ministry. His episcopal journey is entrusted to God’s loving care, with the prayer that he may continue to serve with wisdom, courage, and joy.
Crescat et Florat
May his Episcopal ministry grow and flourish — inspiring, uniting, and lovingly helping to solve the challenges of our times for the glory of God and the good of His people.
