Birth Centenary of Late Rev. Dr. Nicolau Pereira celebrated at St. Xavier’s College

St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, celebrated the 100th Birth Anniversary of Late Rev. Dr. Nicolau Pereira, with a grand opening to the week long program, paying rich tributes to the legacy of an accomplished scholar and leader who served for more than a quarter of a century as the Principal of the College. The program brought together, the Management, former staff members, alumni, heads of neighbouring institutions, PTA members, current staff members and students, along with family members of Fr Nicolau.  

The solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by His Eminence Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrao, with the theme , “He has made everything beautiful in His time,” was a reflection on the importance of gratitude for the past together with responsibility towards the future.

The Administrator, Rev. Canon Antonio Salema, in his welcome Address highlighted the significance of commemorating a former Principal whose contribution had left a lasting mark on the college. He also acknowledged the continued commitment of the present faculty in carrying forward the institution’s vision.

Officiating Principal, Ms. Ursula Barreto reminiscing her days as a student of Fr Nicolau described him as a disciplinarian who deeply cared for his students and a visionary leader who was much ahead of his time. She recalled his working with colleagues, building a culture of excellence with no compromise on values. 

“Paying Tribute to a Rich Legacy,” featured Ms. Edwina Pereira’s presentation, “Cura Personalis,” which traced his early life, vocation and professional journey, including his tenure as Principal from 1965 to 1991. She also recalled the affection with which he was fondly known as “Pop” by generations of students and members of the college community. Former faculty of St Xavier’s College Prof. Dr. Arthur Gomes and President of BMX Mr. Lucindo Faria shared their memories and reflections, offering insights into his personality, leadership and dedication.

Addressing the gathering, Archbishop Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão paid tribute to the legacy of Rev. Dr. Nicolau Pereira and stressed the importance of preserving and transmitting the values of faith, education and service to future generations.

Director Higher Education Shri Bhushan Savoikar was welcomed and presented a momento by the Cardinal. A major highlight was the release of the special centenary edition of the college magazine, The Halcyon, dedicated to Rev. Dr. Nicolau Pereira. The issue served as a nostalgic tribute to his association with the college and his influence on generations of students. The tribute wall featured a beautiful display of messages and tributes that poured in from alumni and ex staff members.  

The celebrations continued with a cultural programme featuring the students’ dance presentation, ‘Where Footprints Inspire’, followed by ‘Sound and Symphony’, an instrumental medley. The staff added a special touch with their presentation of ‘Gonvlli Kitlo Boro’, celebrating the cultural spirit of the Xavier’s community.

The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Dr. Maria Claudette Gomes. The College Anthem marked the conclusion of the inaugural ceremony. The centenary celebrations of Late Rev. Dr. Nicolau Pereira was a meaningful tribute to a life dedicated to faith, education and service, leaving the Xavier’s community with a renewed appreciation of its heritage and history.
