Discover the story of Goa’s iconic dessert at the Convent of Santa Monica
The Museum of Christian Art, in collaboration with The Goan Kitchen, warmly invites you to an extraordinary culinary and cultural experience at the historic Convent of Santa Monica in Old Goa — the very place where, according to oral tradition, the beloved Goan dessert Bebinca was first created!
Legend has it that centuries ago, within the cloistered walls of this grand convent, a resourceful nun named Sister Bebiana sought to create a dessert as rich and layered as the life and faith that surrounded her. Inspired by the abundance of egg yolks left over after the convent’s nuns used egg whites for starching their habits, and determined to make use of local ingredients like coconut milk and ghee, Sister Bebiana crafted a delicate pudding with multiple thin, caramelized layers. Her creation came to be known as Bebinca — named in her honour. It soon became a treasured part of Goa’s culinary and cultural heritage.
In this immersive experience, participants will learn the intricate, step-by-step process of making Bebinca from chefs of The Goan Kitchen.
The experience also includes a specially curated walk through the historic 17th century Convent of Santa Monica. Guided by museum facilitators, participants will explore its monumental architecture, cloistered courtyards and magnificent murals.
Every participant will receive a specially curated goodie bag — featuring a slice of freshly made Bebinca, a MoCA Mini (a delightful keepsake from the Museum of Christian Art), and other thoughtfully selected souvenirs.
Come, be a part of this unforgettable experience where history, legend, and culinary tradition come alive!
