Exciting Sports Mela Ignites the Spirit of Competition among Catechism Children

“Sports not only build better athletes, but also better people.”

The Parish Youth of Pilerne (PYP) organized a vibrant and energetic Sports Mela for all the Catechism children on a lively Sunday at the Pilerne- Saligao Seminary . The event began on an enthusiastic note with a warm welcome and was officially declared open by the Parish Priest of St. John the Baptist Church, Rev. Fr. Derick Xavier Fernandes. His encouraging words inspired the young athletes to give their best.

Sports Secretary Vishal Joseph took charge and divided the 21 eager participants into three teams: St. Christopher, St. Sebastian, and St. John Paul II—all saints known for their unique connection to sports and physical endurance. The selection of these patron saints set the tone for a day of healthy competition, camaraderie, and fun.

The event featured a wide array of games that catered to everyone’s interests, from indoor games like Table Tennis and Carrom, to outdoor activities like football and athletics. A thrilling tie-breaker rounded off the day’s events, adding an extra element of excitement to the competition. The PYP organizers ensured that each child got a chance to participate in most, if not all, of the games, fostering an inclusive and spirited environment.

With laughter, cheers, and friendly rivalry filling the air, the Sports Mela was not just about winning or losing but about embracing teamwork, sportsmanship, and the joy of playing together. This remarkable day left an indelible mark on every participant, reminding us of all that “the true spirit of sports lies in giving your all and cheering each other on!”
