Journey of Canacona Deanery Youth with the Pilgrim Cross & the Portrait of Mother Mary

We are all pilgrims with HOPE on the Journey of Faith

This year holds special significance for all of us as we prepare for the Jubilee Year 2025 and the exposition of St. Francis Xavier. The theme resonates deeply: “We are all pilgrims with Hope on the journey of faith.” Inspired by St. John Paul II, the Diocesan Youth Centre has embarked on a unique endeavour – the Pilgrim Cross and the Portrait of Mary – set to traverse all the Deaneries of the Archdiocese of Goa, with a purpose to awaken and strengthen the hearts of the youth, reminding them that they, too, are pilgrims on this sacred path.

The Canacona Deanery felt blessed to commence its journey on 28th of July from Old Goa to Canacona. The first stop was at St. Anne’s Parish, Agonda. Here, the youth and parishioners gathered in solemn anticipation. A meaningful prayer service unfolded, drawing heartfelt participation from all. The cross and the Portrait of Mary found its place amidst natural greenery prepared by the youth, thus creating a serene atmosphere for contemplation. The symbolic placement of thorns added depth to our prayers – a poignant reminder of Christ’s sacrifice.

Indeed, the Cross stands as the quintessential symbol of our lives. It embodies the love of our suffering God, who bears the weight of humanity’s sins. This same Cross has the power to soften even the hardest hearts, leading sinners toward repentance and salvation. Its arms stretch wide, revealing the immeasurable love of God. Our encounter with the Pilgrim Cross and the portrait of Mary left an indelible mark – not only on the youth but also on the elders who joined in prayer. Their spirits were uplifted, and their faith deepened.

A remarkable detail deserves mention: the Pilgrim Cross, meticulously crafted from 198 pieces of wood, symbolizes the unity of all parish churches and chapels within the Archdiocese of Goa. Its captivating form invites us to contemplate the joyful companionship of Christ with His Church – a union that transcends time and space.

The journey continued, weaving through other parishes of the Deanery: Chaudi, Bhatpal, Chiplem, Loliem, Galgibhag, and Sadolxem. Each parish embraced the Pilgrim Cross and the Portrait of Mother Mary with unwavering devotion, organizing meaningful services and creative decoration. On 4th of August, the same was passed to Fr. Afzal Fernandes, Deanery Youth Animator of Quepem Deanery, where the journey continues until the Diocesan Youth Day in December 2024.

May this pilgrimage continue to inspire young hearts, ignite hope, and draw us closer to the divine. As fellow travellers on this faith-filled path, we carry the Cross with reverence, knowing that our journey is both personal and communal.
