On the Solemnity of St Joseph, Husband of Mary, the parish of Santo Estevam had the honour of hosting the Diocesan Jubilee of Fathers & Husbands in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman on 19th March 2025. The celebration commenced with the Holy Eucharist, presided over by His Excellency, Most Rev. Simião Purificação Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, alongside concelebrants Fr Leo Fernandes (Executive Secretary of the Diocesan Pastoral Secretariat), Fr Rosario Oliveira, and Fr Peter Gonsalves.
In his homily, Bishop Simião reflected on the theme ‘St Joseph: A Model of Hope for Fathers.’ He emphasised St Joseph as a guiding light for fathers, portraying him as a man of deep prayer, respect for women, and silent yet unwavering hope. He urged men and husbands to embrace their roles with faith, love, and responsibility, becoming beacons of hope for their families and society. A special prayer was offered for all fathers, followed by the sprinkling of holy water.
The celebration continued with a vibrant cultural programme organised by the parishioners in honour of fathers and husbands. Fr Leo Fernandes delivered a heartfelt reflection on the role of fathers, describing them as HERO: H – Humility in silence, E – Example of sacrificial love, R – Rich in faith, and O – Offering of love and service. He expressed gratitude to the parish community for hosting such a meaningful diocesan event.
The cultural programme featured a variety of performances, including a welcome song by children, the ceremonial cutting of a celebratory cake, and handmade cards presented to fathers by their children. Other highlights included a skit on fatherhood, traditional folk songs, a Manddo performance, a puppet show, and humorous acts. A particularly moving moment was when a wife expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am who I am today because of my husband and my father.” A young child also shared his love for his father, saying, “He is my world and guiding light.”
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the Moderator of Parish Pastoral Council. The Jubilee of Fathers & Husbands was not just a celebration but a tribute to the pillars of our families. Through prayer, reflection, and cultural expressions, the occasion beautifully highlighted St Joseph as a model of faith, humility, and strength. It served as a reminder of the sacrifices and love that fathers pour into their families, shaping lives with wisdom and dedication.
As we move forward, may we continue to honour, respect, and cherish our fathers, recognising their silent yet profound presence in our lives. Let this Jubilee serve as an inspiration for all men to embrace their roles with faith and hope, following the example of St Joseph. May God bless all fathers and strengthen them in their mission of love and leadership.
