Mend-a-Melody, A Sound Art Workshop curated by Kids at MoCA
In a 2 hour workshop, participants tried crafting their instruments from recyclable materials. With the help of museum storytellers, they understood the importance of sound engineering in the church of Santa Monica and how different materials absorb or help reverberate sounds.
They also experimented with different instruments and tried to create musical compositions. Playing together was a friendly challenge to their creativity. Finally, the amateur musicians were ready to craft and play their musical pieces. Two new instruments were added to their repertoire, A \’bottle-frog\’ tik tiki and a puppeteer\’s whistle, inspired by the designs of educator Arvind Gupta.
With a newfound understanding of how they can experiment with different sounds and materials, our aspiring musicians are well on their way to a solo in the spotlight!
