The Western Region Bible Seminar, hosted by the Archdiocese of Bombay under the patronage of Archbishop John Rodrigues, took place over three enriching days at Sarvodaya on the serene campus of St. Pius X College Seminary. Organized by the Western Regional Bible Commission (WRBC), with leadership from Bishop Simião Purificação Fernandes, Chairman of the Western Regional Bible Commission, Fr. Macson Fernandes, Regional Secretary and Fr. Walter Dsouza, Bombay Diocesan Bible Commission Secretary, a total of 86 participants attended the event—52 from across the Western Region and 34 from the Archdiocese of Bombay. Under the theme “Journeying through the Pentateuch: From Creation to the Threshold of the Promised Land,” they engaged deeply with the foundational books of the Bible, tracing God’s unfolding plan from creation through the patriarchs, the exodus, the giving of the Law, and the call to faithfulness as the people stood on the edge of the Promised Land.
The program featured a series of insightful sessions led by experienced resource persons. Fr. Walter D’Souza provided profound reflections on Genesis chapters 1-11, addressing creation and early human history, as well as the Book of Numbers and its portrayal of the wilderness journey. Fr. Macson Fernandes illuminated the lives of Abraham and Moses, highlighting their pivotal roles in faith and leadership. Other speakers included Fr. Mariano D’Costa, who explored Jacob’s transformation through grace; Fr. Lui Heredia, who reflected on God’s Providence in Joseph’s story; Fr. Michael D’Cunha, who unpacked the richness of the Sinai covenant and the Law; Fr. Anil Pereira, who delved into the themes of holiness in Leviticus; and Fr. Patrick Mattias SDB, Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for Bible, who offered deep insights on Deuteronomy and renewed commitment to God’s enduring faithfulness.
The seminar integrated spiritual practices alongside scholarly study. The daily Eucharistic celebrations were presided over by Bishop Alwyn D’Silva and Fr. Gilbert De Lima, while guided sessions of Lectio Divina, and the Rosary, enabled participants to not only learn about the Word but also to pray with it, fostering a holistic encounter with Scripture. Reports and sharing from Diocesan Secretaries, along with an encouraging address from the CCBI Executive Secretary, further enriched the collective experience and strengthened regional collaboration in promoting love for the Bible.
The event was made possible through the generous support and patronage of Archbishop John Rodrigues, along with the dedicated efforts of the Western Region Bible Commission team. Special appreciation goes to Fr. Walter and Ms. Lynette for their meticulous organization and coordination, which ensured the smooth flow of the programme. The management, staff, and support team at Sarvodaya provided warm hospitality, comfortable accommodations, and attentive service, creating a peaceful environment conducive to reflection and discussion. All participants contributed to the seminar’s vitality through their active engagement, enthusiastic sharing, and spirit of communion.
This gathering deepened biblical understanding, renewed commitment to God’s Word, and inspired attendees to carry forward the insights gained as they continue their faith journey in service to the Church. The Western Region Bible Commission looks ahead to building on this fruitful initiative.
