Caritas Goa celebrated International Women’s Day with a series of vibrant programmes alongside their Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in North Goa and South Goa, highlighting the strength, creativity, and community leadership of women at the grassroots level.
The first celebration was held at St. Anthony’s Church, Siolim, in collaboration with the Social Unit of the Missionary Sisters of the Queen of the Apostles (SRA) and the local parish. Sixteen SHGs participated in the programme, which began with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Marcos D’Souza MSFS.
The event featured a variety of interactive activities designed to encourage teamwork and creativity. Participants engaged in a floral decoration activity, creating vibrant arrangements, and took part in a “Cooking Without Fire” competition guided by Mr. Ashton Souza. A traditional Goan Mando performance by Mr. Braz and his troupe added a cultural touch to the celebration.
Addressing the gathering on the theme “Give to Gain,” Fr. Maverick Fernandes, Director of Caritas Goa, emphasized the generosity and nurturing spirit of women, noting their indispensable role in building a compassionate society. Fr. Dr. Socorro Mendes, Parish Priest of St. Anthony’s Church, commended the enthusiasm and commitment of the SHG members. The “Maria Goretti” SHG was awarded first place for maintaining consistent documentation of the SHG group, followed by the “Milan” SHG in second place. The programme was coordinated by the SRA Sisters under the leadership of Sr. Shirley Fernandes.
A similar celebration was held in South Goa for the SHGs. The programme began with the Holy Eucharist, with Fr. Maverick, as the main celebrant along with Rev. Fr. Dr. Leslie Rego, Dean of Ponda Deanery, and Fr. Leonard Correia of Borim as concelebrants. SHGs from Borim, Shiroda, and Panchwadi actively participated in the liturgy.
The cultural segment included a prayer dance by the St. Joseph SHG from Shiroda, a poem recitation honouring women by Mrs. Rosy, and lively performances by various SHGs. The Panchwadi group presented a dance, while the SFX SHG from Shiroda staged a skit illustrating the positive impact of SHGs on women’s lives. A Mando performance by the St. Anthony SHG from Borim added to the festive atmosphere.
In his address, Fr. Maverick appreciated the efforts of the SHGs and encouraged them to continue contributing to society while inspiring more women to join such initiatives. Fr. Leslie expressed gratitude to all those involved in guiding and supporting the groups.
Caritas Goa recognized the contributions of SHG members at both events, reinforcing its commitment to empowering women and strengthening their role in community development. The celebrations concluded with fellowship and refreshments prepared by the participants.
