Faith, Fellowship, and Fatima: A Resounding Success at the Marian Congress in Goa

The World Apostolate of Fatima (WAF) in Goa recently concluded its Marian Congress  a two-day event commemorating 70 years of WAF’s devoted presence in this blessed region. The congress drew an enthusiastic crowd, with over 150 attendees participating in the overnight program and close to 300 faithful joining the second-day service and Eucharistic Celebration. The air was thick with palpable devotion and a sense of shared purpose, a vibrant tapestry woven from individual prayers and collective hymns.

The congress, held at Pilar, kicked off on July 15, 2025, with early arrivals and a rush at registration. The inauguration followed, featuring a significant blessing of the newly arrived Statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with Child Jesus, (recalling the 1925 Pontevedra apparition). This moment was truly touching, as a hush fell over the crowd, a sense of profound reverence for this sacred image, still seen even a week later as the WhatsApp Display Picture on many of those that attended.

The evening’s rich tapestry of spiritual nourishment began with Dr. Fr. Jason Fernandes, who presented on “Parish Renewal with Mary”. Day one’s Mass was a powerful beginning, celebrated by Rev. Fr. Kennet Teles, Episcopal Vicar South Zone. His homily set the tone for the entire congress by focusing on the core message of Fatima, resonating deeply and igniting a renewed sense of commitment to the Blessed Mother’s call. Following the Mass, Fr. Jose Fernandes (PP of Cotto de Fatorpa) led a presentation “Living the Fatima Message in the Modern World”. A significant highlight throughout the congress was that after each talk, on both days, a Decade of the Rosary was prayed with meditations on that Mystery from the WAF-Goa written books, deepening the spiritual reflection and creating a powerful wave of communal prayer. The first day concluded with a solemn One Hour adoration service. The second day, July 16, 2025, began with a pre-breakfast “Hour of Holiness” (WAF 10 Step Ignatian modelled prayer programme). Fr. Pio Almeida (Spiritual Advisor of WAF-Goa) then gave a talk on “Understanding the Power of the Meditative Rosary”. Fr. Sevile Antao spoke on “The Brown Scapular – A Sign of Marian Protection”. Each speaker captivated the audience, offering fresh perspectives and strengthening the attendees’ understanding of the Fatima message. Dr. Celcio Dias, ex-International Secretary of World Apostolate of Fatima, also presented on “December 10, 1925 – The Forgotten Apparition That Completes Fatima – 100 Years”

I was privileged to lead two key workshops: ‘Growing WAF Parish Units’ on day one, and ‘Growing ‘Prayer Cells’ in Your Community’ on day two. Both sessions offered practical guidance rooted in the Church’s call for communion, participation, and mission, drawing principles from the final document of the Synodal Assembly and the CCBI’s ‘Journeying Towards a Synodal Church: Mission 2033’ document.

The congress’ high point was the Midday Eucharistic Celebration that was presided over by His Eminence Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrao, Archbishop of Goa & Daman, with three to four other Reverend Parish Priests concelebrating on both days. The atmosphere during the Mass was truly electrifying, a profound experience of communal worship. His Eminence’s homily powerfully reminded us of the Daily Rosary’s critical importance for peace, echoing Our Lady’s request at Fatima. It was a poignant reminder, leaving many with a renewed commitment to this powerful prayer.

The event concluded with a special felicitation ceremony honoring past WAF-Goa ExCom members over 70 years, recognizing their dedicated service. This was a moment of deep gratitude and respect, as the current generation acknowledged the foundational work of those who came before them. The event also acknowledged the outstanding achievements of performing WAF Parish units, chosen from the close to 70 units actively existing across the Goa Archdiocese. The pride on the faces of the recognized units was clear, a testament to their unwavering dedication and vibrant efforts in spreading the message of Fatima. The entire congress truly served as a vibrant testament to faith, community, and the enduring message of Our Lady of Fatima. The congress ended with the veneration of the Relics of Fatima Saints.

This Marian Congress beautifully embodied the spirit of synodality, demonstrating the Church’s call for walking together. Organized primarily by the dedicated lay faithful of WAF-Goa, it powerfully showcased their initiative and organizational prowess. Yet, the spiritual heart and theological depth of the congress were profoundly enriched by the guidance of the clergy, with most of the talks and all Eucharistic celebrations led by priests. “This harmonious collaboration at WAF Marian Congress 2025 between the laity and the clergy truly brought the vision of a synodal Church to life”.
