St. Xavier’s College Inaugurates 63rd Academic Year

St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa–Goa, marked the beginning of its 63rd academic year with a solemn Inaugural Ceremony on 12th July 2025. Held in the college Ark, the programme commenced at 9:30 a.m. with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by His Eminence Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, Archbishop of Goa and Daman. The event revolved around the theme “With Hope and Wisdom, We Journey to Excellence.”
The ceremonial lamp was lit by the Archbishop, along with key college figures including Rev. Fr. Antonio Salema (Administrator), Fr. Joism D’Souza, Acting Principal Ms. Ursula Barretto, and Vice-Principal Prof. Filipe Rodrigues e Melo. In his welcome address, Fr. Salema inspired the gathering with the words of Pope Francis, urging all to embrace the year ahead with resilience and optimism. Ms. Barretto highlighted the college’s academic and co-curricular achievements and expressed gratitude to faculty and staff for their unwavering dedication. She also acknowledged the service of retiring staff members.
Prof. Afonso Botelho delivered the Lectio Brevis titled “Exploring Goan Behaviour in Everyday Life through the Dramatic Lens of Erving Goffman,” providing sociological insights into Goan identity and social interaction.
Three publications—The Halcyon (edited by Ms. Sunita Mesquita), The Xavierwrite (e-release by Ms. Freda Dsouza), and Spectrum (digital release by Mr. Zen Lobo)—were officially launched. Retirees Ms. Alice D’Cruz, Ms. Anuradha Kakodkar, and Mr. Suresh Parsekar were honoured for decades of service.
In his keynote address, Cardinal Ferrão emphasized the importance of gratitude as a foundation for humility and personal growth. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Gema Athaide, followed by a cultural programme featuring classical dance, spoken word, and an a cappella performance by students.
