Film Screening – Painted Hymns – The Chapels of Santa Monica

Standing atop the Monte Santo, resolutely facing north is the Convent of Santa Monica. Asia\’s first and largest convent, the construction of this building was completed in 1627. Once a cloistered convent, it now houses the Institute Mater Dei and Museum of Christian Art (MoCA). The convent had eleven private chapels of which only three survive today. The filmmaker Dr. Omkar Bhatkar on one of his Goan sojourns came across murals in Santa Monica of which little is known and written. With varied efforts and permissions, he has created this visual theological piece. 

*This film is an attempt to document these fading 17th-century murals in a poetic form*, as very little is known about them to be depicted in a documentary format and therefore the film uses handpicked poetry from world literature spanning across time and cultures.
