Herança Portuguesa, a vibrant celebration of Portuguese language and culture, was organized by the Cell for Promoting Diversity & Inclusion of St Xavier’s College, in collaboration with Fundação Oriente. A total of 12 teams participated in the event, including 8 schools and 4 Higher Secondary Schools of North Goa.
The programme commenced with a prayer, followed by the Opening Remarks delivered by Rev. Dr. Ramiro Luis, the coordinator of the event, who warmly welcomed the dignitaries and highlighted the importance of appreciating the Portuguese cultural heritage in Goa. The Officiating Principal, Ms. Ursula Barreto, addressed the gathering, encouraging students to participate, stating that such events celebrate diversity, foster dialogue, and build bridges across cultures. The Chief Guest, Dr. Paulo Gomes, Director of Fundação Oriente, delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing the role of such collaborations in strengthening cultural ties and promoting mutual understanding. He also expressed the need to study one foreign language.
The cultural segment of the programme showcased a rich blend of performances and activities. The musical presentation “Fado meets Dekhnni” by the Xavier’s ensemble beautifully fused Portuguese and Goan musical traditions. This was followed by a Portuguese Reading contest, where students demonstrated clarity and confidence in the language. A Canva painting activity also formed part of the event, allowing participants to creatively express Portuguese cultural themes through art.
The audience was then treated to a lively Goan dance performance by the students, followed by the screening of reels prepared by the participating teams for the Reel Making Contest, creatively capturing elements of Portuguese influence in Goa. The Portuguese Dance Performance by the BBA students added grace and vibrancy to the event. One of the highlights of the day was the Personalidade Portuguesa Contest, where participants showcased their knowledge, personality, and connection to Portuguese culture with great enthusiasm.
The event was gracefully compered by Dr. Sharmila Pais and Ms Arina Frank, who ensured the smooth flow of the programme with poise and enthusiasm. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Mr. Herwin Furtado, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, organizers, participants, and collaborators for making the event a grand success. This was followed by the Prize Distribution ceremony, recognizing the efforts and talents of the participants. The event came to a fitting close with the College Anthem.
