MoCA’s Chitari Art Masterclass Held at Cuncolim

The Museum of Christian Art (MoCA), Old Goa, in collaboration with traditional Artist Vinod Prabhakar Mardolkar, successfully hosted Folk Frames: A Chitari Art Masterclass at Cuncolim. The workshop celebrated the legacy of the indigenous Chitari art, a centuries-old tradition where wood is transformed into vivid expressions of faith, festivity, and folklore.

Participants both adults and children  immersed themselves in this colourful craft through hands-on sessions that explored traditional motifs, natural pigments, and painting techniques passed down through generations. Under Vinod Mardolkar’s guidance, they created their own Chitari-inspired artworks to take home, experiencing first-hand the precision and creativity that define this Goan folk tradition.

The session received enthusiastic feedback from participants, who described it as “an enriching and satisfying experience” and “a unique opportunity to connect with Goa’s artistic heritage.” The workshop reinforced MoCA’s commitment to preserving and promoting traditional art forms by creating meaningful spaces for learning, dialogue, and cultural continuity.

Following the success of this edition, MoCA is delighted to announce the next Chitari Art Masterclass on 22nd November at 9:30 a.m. in Cuncolim — an opportunity to once again celebrate Goa’s timeless craftsmanship and living heritage.
