800th Anniversary of the Transitus of St Francis of Assisi Celebrated at Colvale

The parish of St Francis of Assisi, Colvale, celebrated the 800th Anniversary of the Transitus of St Francis of Assisi on Sunday, 20 September 2026. The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by His Eminence Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, Archbishop of Goa and Daman.

The church at Colvale has a special connection with St Francis of Assisi. Founded by the Franciscans in 1591, it is dedicated to the Five Wounds, or Stigmata, of St Francis.

On his arrival, Cardinal Ferrão was welcomed by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr Arlino de Mello, the Assistant Parish Priest, Rev. Fr Agnelo Fernandes, OFM Cap, and representatives of the Fabrica. The youth provided a motorcycle escort from the highway to the church. Members of the Confraria and children from the parish catechism were also present along the roadside to welcome him.

The Mass was concelebrated by Fr Arlino de Mello, Parish Priest, and Fr Agnelo Fernandes, OFM Cap, Assistant Parish Priest, along with other priests.

In his homily, Cardinal Ferrão spoke about the life of St Francis as an example for all those called to follow Christ. He highlighted three aspects of St Francis’ life: his faithful following of Jesus through humility, simplicity and detachment from worldly possessions; his willingness to accept the Cross and the sacrifices that come with discipleship; and his way of proclaiming the Gospel through his life and actions. He encouraged the faithful to carry their own crosses with courage and trust and to be examples of Christ in their homes, workplaces and communities.

After the Mass, the parish’s commemorative magazine, “800 Years – St Francis Lives,” was unveiled by Cardinal Ferrão. He was joined by Fr Arlino de Mello, Fr Agnelo Fernandes, OFM Cap, Fr. Gabriel Fernandes, OFM Cap, the Provincial Minister of the Capuchin (Order of Friars Minor Capuchin) Province of Goa, Fr Simao Rodrigues, Former Parish Priest of Colvale and Ms.Dolorosa Paul, Chief Editor.

A procession was held after the Mass, with the participation of the parish. The celebration marked an important occasion for the parish of Colvale.
