BEEKEEPING TRAINING AT DON BOSCO VOCATIONAL TRAINING INSTITUTE, QUEPEM GOA

The role of bees for boosting agricultural and horticultural production cannot be underestimated. Due to research being done in the recent years and the ensuing awareness, a sizeable number of people from the length and breadth of Goa, have been attending the beekeeping training programs which are conducted almost twice a month at Don Bosco Vocational Training Institute, in Quepem.

On 17th May 2022, in spite of the sweltering heat, 21 participants from various parts of Goa attended the beekeeping training program. The noted apiculturist Mr. P.Shaliyo, while sharing  his vast knowledge and experience on the subject with the participants,  fascinated them with his tireless resources of energy. He introduced the participants to the basics of bee biology and management of the Apis Cerana Indica breed bee colony. Goa is known for its multi floral arboreal vegetation which produces some rare nectar. This is assimilated by the bees resulting in production of uniquely flavoured honey.

The sprawling campus of Don Bosco VTI, with its shady trees, is conducive to environmental related learning and offers the participants some great de-stressing moments.  During the second half of the day, Mr. P. Shaliyo gave a practical demonstration to the participants in the apiary,  which has live beehive colonies.  Some of the participants also handled the combs with live bees which changed their concepts of bee behaviour.

Earlier, the director Fr.Michael D’Costa, informed the participants about the govt. scheme which provides subsidy for purchasing beehive colonies and also the procedure for applying for the same. Several participants expressed keen interest in venturing into apiculture after the day’s highly motivating session. We wish them all much success.
