MoCA Event! HERITAGE HOUR with Professor Walter Rossa
In this month’s edition of the Heritage Hour, MoCA invites Prof. Walter Rossa to speak on the topic: The Santa Monica Convent in its Heritage Environment.
The Convent of Santa Monica is located on the Holy Hill in Old Goa. When it was constructed (1606 -1627), the convent was large enough to accommodate over 100 nuns and her servants. Today the Convent is used as an educational institute for nuns and the former church and choir shelter – as the Museum of Christian Art. The monastic ensemble of the Monicas in Goa is an excellent example of how a heritage asset\’s continued use guarantees its preservation and organic enrichment.
Walter Rossa is professor at the Department of Architecture, and researcher at the Center for the History of Society and Culture of the University of Coimbra. At UC, he also holds the UNESCO Chair in Intercultural Dialogue in Heritages of Portuguese Influence, and co-coordinates the homonymous Ph.D. program. He also co-holds the Cunha Rivara Chair at Goa University. He has published widely on the history of architecture, urbanism, and heritage of former Portuguese colonies. South Asia is one of his preferred research regions. He has also contributed with an essay, Santa Monica Convent – The Building, to MoCA\’s latest publication One Hundred Iconic Art Objects From the Museum of Christian Art.
